* Low monthly fuel cost in normal driving; useful 300-plus-mile maximum range; pleasing number of standard features; excellent crash test scores. Source: Edmunds
* The 2014 Chevrolet Volt electric plug-in hybrid represents a unique twist on the hybrid-car theme. The Volt runs purely on electric current. Once its battery pack is depleted (after 25 to 50 miles), the Volt's gasoline engine kicks on to run a generator, powering the electric motors and helping recharge the batteries. This extends the Volt's range an additional 300 miles or more. The Volt features a Hold mode in its drive selection to conserve battery charge, and a no-cost-option low-emissions package qualifies the Volt for single-occupancy HOV lanes in California and New York. The Hold mode is useful, for example, when driving on a freeway heading into the city, where you'll want the full electric charge available. The 2014 Chevy Volt's electric motor delivers a big dose of torque right from the get-go, letting the car sprint away quickly from a standing start. The interior is covered in bright white and dark accented plastics and touch-sensitive controls for the audio and climate-control functions. Two 7-inch LCD screens replace the traditional analog gauges, with one serving as the instrument cluster (speedometer, fuel, and range gauges) and the other mounted atop the center stack displaying the electric motor/battery operation as well as the available navigation screen. With the goal of total operating efficiency, the Chevrolet Volt's design team crafted a body shape that could cheat the wind. Up front are a rounded nose, closed grille opening and steeply raked windshield. Sharp edges along the Volt's rear fenders help slice through the wind, as does the functional rear hatch spoiler. This is one of the most aerodynamic cars in GM's long history. If you're worried a pure electric car won't be able to satisfy your distance requirements before needing to be recharged, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric sedan is the answer: It carries a charging station around with it, in the form of its 1.4-liter gasoline engine. • The most amazingly economical car I've ever owned

What can I say - my 2012 Volt is the best car I've ever owned, foreign or domestic. It's also the most economical car I've ever owned - period. Comfortable, fun to drive, and cheap to keep. After 133K miles my total maintenance runs to 3 oil changes, one engine air filter, one set of new tires and tire rotations. Period. And I've saved over 3,800 gallons of gas in the meantime. Add it up - while expensive to buy (I bought early), it will cost far less than almost any other car by the time I reach 5 years of ownership. What? Battery worries? Sorry, the battery is just as strong today as the day I bought it 3-1/2 years ago. Not sure what to more to say except this car is a keeper (although the new Gen 2 Volt's are sure tempting!) Hmmm, maybe it's worth noting that I'm a super commuter and make a round trip to work of 186 miles every day on an average of 1.9 gallons of gas. Around town driving seldom uses any gas at all. Totally awesome. One last note though - avoid use of Sport Mode when the CHP are around - it's hard to behave when you're having fun.
  • Money saving commuter car

Chevy volt is THE perfect commuter car overall. It really is the best of a gasoline car and an EV. There is zero range anxiety and you reap all the benefits of an EV. There is not much that the Volt trades-off really. The car could have been a little roomier. Depending on how big you are, it can affect the comfort of you and your passengers. I have owned my 2013 Volt for the past three years and I am very pleased with it. The 40 mile electric-only range of this car is perfect for most commutes. Once you settle into a routine of charging at home or work, you barely think about it. Unlike the Teslas, you have zero range anxiety with the Volt. You don't need a "charging plan" for your longer, inter-city trips; just fill gas and be on your way. On normal commute days just drive past the gas stations. Volt only takes premium fuel, but if you don't drive it more than 40 miles on an average, you probably won't care. As an oversimplification, the Volt really has two independent engines -- a gas one and an electric one. By independent, I mean they can pretty much independently power the car without needing each other, and do a pretty good job at it. The only thing you notice is that the car is only as zippy as a regular gas car when it is in gas mode. The transition between gas and electric is pretty seamless. It is a fun car to drive when on EV mode. The entertainment system is great comparing other cars of the same age. It mostly stays out of your way and just works! The car needs an oil change roughly every two years, but thats pretty much it. It is very comparable to other EVs in terms of maintenance. The battery system seems reliable and I still can get 40 miles after 6 years. On top of that this car comes with a 8 year/160k mile Voltec warranty that covers defects in the electric drive system. Kudos to the great designers and engineers who made this! You guys made my life much better.

I drive about 50% gas long trips and 50% electric. Lifetime of 75 mpg. Charge cord gave problems and GM wouldn't fix it. Bought a new one and it went bad first charge and GM said my fault. Got an after market and has worked fine for the last 3 years. I'm not sure why GM couldn't fix or get it working and I'm not, but the after market is much cheaper and works better. Car runs great.
